Recover a Corrupted System File
If an essential Windows file gets whacked by a virus or otherwise corrupted, restore it from the Windows CD. Search the CD for the filename, replacing the last character with an underscore; for example, Notepad.ex_. If it's found, open a command prompt and enter the command EXPAND, followed by the full pathname of the file and of the desired destination: EXPAND D:\SETUP\NOTEPAD.EX_ C:\Windows\NOTEPAD.EXE. If either pathname contains any spaces, surround it with double quotes.
If the file isn't found, search on the unmodified filename. It will probably be inside a CAB file, which Win XP treats as a folder. Simply right-drag and copy the file to the desired location. In other Windows platforms, search for a file matching *.cab that contains the filename. When the search is done, open a command prompt and enter EXTRACT /L followed by the desired location, the full pathname of the CAB file, and the desired filename; for example: EXTRACT /L C:\Windows D:\I386\Driver.cab Notepad.exe. Again, if the destination or CAB file pathname contains spaces, surround it with double quotes.

A TRICK to get a warranty replace phone
You bought a nokia phone about a year ago and warranty will be soon over. You wish you could get a new phone?
Well this is how we do it:
Remove battery cover and battery
Connect a 12V DC power supply to the phone's battery connector
as shown in the picture
An IC will then burn internally and your phone will die. There will be no sign of it so Nokia technicians won't see that you did something to your phone and will replace it with a new one.
Do not try this if your phone is not under warranty
Do not try this if you suspect or you are not sure if your phone has ever suffered liquid or drop damage
Do not try this if you don't understand what I'm talking about

Yahoo Messeger, no ad's
Yahoo! IM no longer uses 'YUrl', but uses 'View' instead. You gotta click on each key inside of 'View' and edit the 'banner url' string to anything you want... I simply cleared mine out completely and it works flawlessly!
Here is what you gotta do:
Run regedit
Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Yahoo -> Pager -> View
Inside the 'View' key there are a several other keys... go through each one and edit the 'banner url' string to your liking. It even works if the string is left blank (this causes it to look as if ads were never even implemented)!
Restart Yahoo! IM for the effect to take hold.
This is great for Yahoo! IM 5.6 users who don't want to be bothered with ads.
Your Home Page Nevr Being Changed
Some websites illegally modify your registry editor and set their website as default home page, for stop this,

XP Tricks&Tips
001. Remove MSN Instant Messenger Program
Some of us just don't like to use this IM program. I myself have looked in the Add/Remove Program panel and can't find any way to remove it there. I found out how to do it with a little research. Just go to Start->Run and type in rundll32 setupapi,InstallHin fSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot% \INF\msmsgs. inf and hit ENTER. Do a copy and paste to avoid typographical errors.
002. Remove Internet Explorer Completely - All version of Windows
Microsoft said that removing IE may make Windows unstable because it has key components that makes Windows function properly. Well, there is a way to remove it completely. Go to this site and get IEradicator. Many people have used it before and removed IE with no problems afterwards.
003. Shutdown Windows Faster
All versions of Windows have the same problem. It usually takes a little longer to shutdown when you have the Exit Sound enabled. To disable this go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Sounds. Scroll down and look for Exit Windows . Click on it once and then under Sounds, choose None. You should see faster shutdown times.
004. Clean out files in Prefetch Folder
There are files located in the Prefetch folder (C:\Windows\Prefetch ) that you may safely delete. These files are usually left there by other programs that were using. You can either manually delete them or use this batch file that I created to do it. All you need to do is unzip the file called prefetch.bat into your Desktop and then double click on it. You will see the command prompt come up shortly and disappear. That's it.
005. Remove temporary files from Temp Folder
You may have noticed that .tmp files appear in the Temp folder ( C:\Windows\Temp). You may delete these files. Since these files might be accessed by another program, it's a good idea to delete these when you don't have any programs open. It's best to do this right after you login to ensure that no programs are using it. If you don't want to bother going into that folder every time to delete it, you can download xp_downloads. zip which contains a file called del_temp.bat . Just extract that file and double click on it to run it.
006. Add programs/folders to SendTo menu
When you right click on a file/folder and choose SendTo, you will get a list of programs/folders to send it to. Let's just say that you want to add or delete one of your own programs/folders. This could be accomplished very easily. Just navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\your_ username\ SendTo. In this folder you may add or delete any program/folder shortcuts. All you need to do is right click on the program you want to add, and drag and drop (choose Create Shortcuts Here) it into the SendTo folder.
007. Make XP stop displaying zipped files as folders
In XP, zipped folders could be viewed just by opening up the file. If you have a third party zip program that you want to use instead of the built in one by XP, you can stop XP from displaying the zipped files as folders. This may also be useful for those who are on a slow PC and don't want to open zip files using XP's built in zip program.
To disable this in XP, go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll. You may just copy and paste the command into the Run menu. If you want to undo it, just type in regsvr32 zipfldr.dll. Zip away.
008. How to Create a Password Reset Disk
Windows XP allows you to create a password reset disk, just in case you forget the password and can't login. This is only for computers that are not on a domain. Those that are on a domain may or may not work the same way.
Go to Start->Control Panel->User Accounts and click on your username. Under Related Tasks on the left pane, click Prevent a forgotten password . A wizard will show up. Click next and then insert a floppy disk into your floppy drive and choose to save the reset disk on the floppy.
Enter your current password and then click Next and Finish. The floppy will now contain your encrypted password. If you forget your password, you can just use the Password Reset Wizard to create a new one. Just make sure to create another reset disk once you changed your password. So if you forgot your password and changed it to a new one, create another reset disk by repeating the above procedure again.
009. Set User Logon Hours
You can restrict a certain user to only use the computer at a certain time interval. Let's say you have a username called Bill and you want Bill to access the computer only from 9AM - 9PM from Monday through Friday. You can do this by going to Start->Run and type in net user Bill /time:M-F,9am- 9pm. For 24-hour time, you can replace the time with 09:00-21:00 instead. This will only allow the user to login during those hours on those days.
010. Disable XP Messenger Service
Disable the messenger service built into Windows XP to prevent ads or other popups from coming up when using Outlook (and maybe even Outlook Express). Anyway, just disable it for better performance. To disable it, right click on My Computer->Manage->Services and Applications->Services and right click on Messenger and choose Stop. This will stop the service. There may be cases when the Messenger Service is required for some programs to run properly, so if that's the case, I would set it to Manual instead of Stop .
011. Customize SendTo Menu - All versions of Windows
Have you ever wanted to use some other program to open up a certain file but had to go through My Computer->Program Files and then click on the program's folder and then the program itself. You can open a file with any programs you have with ease by adding them to the SendTo menu. You know, when you right click on a file and choose Send To. To do this, go to Start->Run and type in sendto to open up the SendTo folder. Now go to My Computer->C: Drive->Program Files and open up any of the program folders you want. Then right click on the individual programs and drag it to the SendTo folder and choose Create Shortcuts Here. Do that for each program you want to be listed there. The next time you right click on a file and choose Send To, you should see those programs listed there.
012. Disable Personalized Menus
Some XP users might not like the personalized menus that XP has. One example of this feature is the highlighting of newly installed programs in the Start Menu. Some users might find this annoying. To turn this feature off right click on the Start Button->Properties->Start Menu tab->Customize->Advance tab->uncheck Highlight newly installed programs. Click OK. Now when new programs are installed they shouldn't be highlighted.
013. Using XP System Restore
One important feature in XP is System Restore. This makes a backup of your data. To create the restore points go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Click Create a restore point and click Next. Type in a description for the restore point and click Create. You're all set. If your system fails for some reason you may use the restore point by hitting the F8 key repeatedly during boot time until a menu comes up. Choose Last known good configuration. This will restore everything to the last time when everything was working ok. It's using the most recent restore point that you created. If you can get into Windows XP, you can go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.
014. Clear System Restore Points
System restore points can take up a huge amount of space due to the many restore points created. You can delete all these restore points by right clicking on My Computer->Properties->System Restore and check Turn off System Restore on all drives. Then make sure to create them again manually for each drive using the method above (Using XP System Restore). That will get rid of the older restore points and leave you with the new and updated one.
015. Disable/Remove Hibernation Mode
The hibernation file which allows a user to use hibernation mode takes up a lot of space. If you use this feature you are allocating/creating space so that when you come back everything (programs and folders) are still open. If you don't use it that much then there's not much sense keeping it. So you may remove it. Go to Start->Control Panel->Power Options->Hibernate tab and uncheck Enable hibernation. That should remove the actual hibernation file. You may double check by doing a Search (F3 key) and search for hiberfil.sys in the C: drive. It shouldn't be found, but if it is, you may safely delete it.
016. Disable Indexing Service
Speed up XP by turning off the Indexing Service for your hard drive. This feature is used to make your searching needs faster, but it's affecting the overall performance so it's best to turn it off. Go to My Computer and right click on the drive that you want the feature to be disabled. Choose Properties and uncheck the box where it says Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching. When a box come up choose to Apply to all folders and subfolders.
017. Rename Multiple Files
This is something new in Windows XP - renaming multiple files. Let's say you have a huge photo collection and want to name them in sequential order. You can do this very easily. Just select all the photos you want to rename (you may use the ctrl key and click on individual files if desired). Then hit the F2 key and type in the name of the file. Hit Enter. It should all rename. So if you entered VacationPhoto, you will have VacationPhoto (1), VacationPhoto (2), VacationPhoto (3), etc.
018. Reinstall Windows XP Without Repeating Online Activation
This has probably happened to most of us already. We have XP installed already and when we reinstall it, we are asked to go online and activate it again. You can avoid doing that by backing up a very small file that has the activation information. Before you do this, keep in mind that your hardware should be the same as before when you activated in order for this to definitely work. Go to C:\Windows\System32 and look for wpa.dbl. Copy that file to a floppy. After you finished reinstalling XP, just rename the current wpa.dbl file in C:\Windows\System32 to something like wpa.old.

Password Tips & Security
Why are passwords important?
Believe it or not, there are lots of people out in the world who try to guess or "crack" passwords in order to snoop around. We have an obligation to protect information stored on our computer systems from unauthorized access. The kind of access people have to computers in public institutions like NYU provides many opportunities for password cracking. Creating "good" passwords and keeping them private are important elements of computer security. This means making "good" passwords that are difficult or impossible to guess or be discovered – even by individuals who with mischievous or criminal intent try to guess or "crack" password in order to gain access to computer accounts or systems.
How can I create a good password?
When activating your NetID and setting or changing your password , please take into account the following password guidelines
1. passwords must be 6 or more characters in length
2. must consist of letters (a-z and/or A-Z) AND at least one number (0-9) AND at least one special character: !@#$%^&*()_-+=[]|\; "~',<>./?
3. the alphabetic portion of a password, taken as a whole, may not be a dictionary word proper name, or person's initials
4. you may not reuse a password that you've previously used with NYUHome
Examples of Good Passwords
1. You can use a phrase to generate a password:
o Take the phrase "I Love To Eat Hotdogs Everyday".
o Use the first letters: iltehe
o Apply capitalization and substitute punctuation/ numbers for letters: Il2e!E
2. You can also use a common word as a seed for a password:
o By itself, "hotdog" makes a horrible password, but if you apply some of the tricks above (capitalization, punctuation, and misspellings) the result is a much better password: H0t!daWg.
o You can also use a word but substitute numbers for some of the letters, and insert a special character in a way that you'll remember. For example, by replacing the vowels with the number 7 in the word "Spiderman," then inserting a backslash between the syllables, the password could be "Sp7d7r/m7n" .
Know what makes for a bad password.
Because the attacks described above are becoming increasingly more common, you don't want to use anything in your password that's personal and easy to guess. Keep in mind the following don'ts:
| • | Don't use only letters or only numbers. |
| • | Don't use names of spouses, children, girlfriends/ boyfriends or pets. |
| • | Don't use phone numbers, Social Security numbers or birthdates. |
| • | Don't use the same word as your log-in, or any variation of it. |
| • | Don't use any word that can be found in the dictionary — even foreign words. |
| • | Don't use passwords with double letters or numbers |
Valid Passwords
These are the requirements for a valid password:
- A password must contain at least six characters. Only the first eight are used, so there isn't any point to having a longer password.
- It must contain at least two alphabetic characters (lower or upper case) and one numeric or "special" character.
- It cannot be your login name or any "scrambled" combination of it.
- A valid password may not contain any of the following "special characters": a pound sign ("#"), an at ("@") symbol, a pipe ("|") or a wildcard ("*" or "?") character.
- Finally, it must differ from your old password by at least three characters.
Change your password often — as in several times a year .
Your network administrator can force your employees to change their password every so often. By default, passwords are set to expire every 42 days in Windows Server 2003. Microsoft recommends having users change their passwords every 30 to 90 days, but encourages you to go with the smaller number. I think 30 days is a reasonable number here. You always want to side with caution when it comes to sensitive information.
What should I avoid when creating a password?
· Do not use your user name, first name, or last name.
Your name and user name are stored in the password file and many cracking programs use this information to generate possible password combinations.
· Do not use anyone's first name or last name.
Many password-cracking programs have large name databases and can easily guess passwords based on names. Names of friends, relatives, fictional characters, etc. are commonly associated with an individual and do not make good passwords.
· Passwords that use patterns on the keyboard (i.e., qwerty) are not secure.
Although such passwords are easily typed, they are also easily guessed.
· Words spelled backwards don't make secure passwords.
Most cracking programs try both the forward and backward representation of words in their databases, and therefore passwords of such nature are not secure.
· Substituting 1's and 0's for l's and o's is not enough to make a good password.
Password cracking programs have rule sets designed to break passwords that substitute numbers for letters they resemble. Similarly, passwords such as 2Good4U, although cute, are not really secure either.
· Do not simply use a word followed or preceded by a number as a password. A common password-guessing algorithm adds numbers to the front or back of a dictionary word, Passwords of this form are therefore easily cracked. Non-alphabetic characters should be used throughout the password.
· Do not use dictionary, or dictionary-based words as passwords.
Password cracking programs have large dictionaries that they use to guess passwords. Cracking programs also have large FOREIGN LANGUAGE dictionaries, therefore, the practice of using foreign words as passwords is INSECURE.
· Your password should NOT be all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters, nor should it have repeating characters.
· Never use a password that has been cited as an example of how to pick a good password.
Password & Account Security
Can I tell others what my password is?
No. Don't tell anyone your password, not even if they claim to be a system administrator. Sharing passwords is a violation of NYU policy. There are good reasons you should not share your password. If someone to whom you had provided your password were to use your account in an inappropriate manner, you could be held responsible for their actions.
Why can't I share my NetID and password with a trusted colleague?
Letting another person use your NetID, no matter how much you trust that person, violates data security. Each NetID is assigned to a specific individual who must accept full responsibility for any work done on that NetID. Each of your colleagues must use his or her own NetID, or apply for one.Note: If you are involved in the hiring of new staff, you should request a NetID ahead of time so that it will be ready for use when needed.
To ensure that your office has access to your files and data for business continuity purposes, your department can use a shared file server, or have an departmental IT staff member set up an alternate account on your computer.
Is it safe to send my login/password through email?
No. You should never include your password in an email message. There are programs out there that have the ability to spy on traffic sent over the internet. If you send out a message with your password in it, there is a possibility that it could be intercepted and then your account would be compromised.
Besides, you're not supposed to be sharing it with anyone anyway, so the need to send it through email would never arise, right?

How to Print a Folder (Directory) Listing
The following instructions explain how to print a folder listing directly to your printer or to copy the listing to a text file that you can open (and format) in a text editor or word processor before printing.
Printing a List of Files Directly to Your Printer
- Exit to a command prompt by clicking Start on the Taskbar and choosing Programs, then Command Prompt.
- To print a list of files in a folder on your computer's hard disk, type the following command at the prompt (e.g., C:\>), replacing c:\folderpath with the full path to the folder you want to print ( e.g., c:\MyFiles). (See also NOTE, below.)
dir c:\folderpath > prn:
- Tap the ENTER key.
- Most likely the list won't print until you initiate a form feed on your printer. On an HP laser printer, press the On Line button and then the Form Feed button. When the list has finished printing, press the On Line button again.
- When finished printing your folder list(s), at the command prompt type Exit and tap the ENTER key to return to Windows NT/95.
| Note: If you want to print a listing of the files on a floppy disk (such as A:), in Step 2 (above) type the following (replacing a: with a different drive designation, if appropriate) : dir a:\ > prn: |
Copying a Folder List to a File Before Printing
- Exit to a command prompt by clicking Start on the Taskbar and choosing Programs, then Command Prompt.
- To copy a list of files in a folder on your computer's hard disk and place the resulting file in the root directory on your C drive, type the following command at the prompt ( e.g., C:\>), replacing c:\folderpath with the full path to the folder you want to print (e.g., c:\MyFiles). (See also WARNING and NOTES, below).
dir c:\folderpath > c:\folderlist. txt
- Tap the ENTER key.
- When finished copying your folder list(s), at the command prompt type Exit and tap the ENTER key to return to Windows NT/95.
- Open, edit/format, and print as follows:
- You can open a file containing a folder list in the text editor Notepad by simply opening (double-clicking) My Computer and double-clicking the name of the text file you want to open ( e.g., folderlist.txt) . Edit and print as desired.
- If you want to edit or format a folder listing in ways that aren't possible in a simple text editor, you can open the file in your word processor. Be sure to choose a "text" file type ( Text Files in Word 97) and to "look in" the correct folder [such as (C:)]. Edit, format, and print as desired.
| WARNING: If you already have a file saved as c:\folderlist. txt, the file created in this procedure will overwrite the previously saved file. If you don't want to overwrite the existing file, choose a name you haven't already used. |
Notes:
- If you want to copy the list of the files on a floppy disk (such as A:), type the following at the command prompt (replacing a: with a different drive designation if appropriate) :
dir a:\ > c:\folderlist. txt
- If you want to place the file list somewhere other than the root directory of your C drive, type the full path name for the resulting file (e.g., c:\MyFiles\folderli st.txt).
- If you plan to copy several folder lists, do one of the following:
- Make a separate file for each list, making sure to give each text file a different name (using the name of the folder being copied, for example, such as worddocs.txt or exceldocs.txt) .
- Create one file and append each folder list by using the following command (notice there are two right angle brackets rather than one):
dir c:\ >> c:\folderlist. txt
- When you no longer need the file(s) containing your folder listing(s), be sure to remember to delete it (them).

Increase the life of ur dvd rom
Increase the life of ur dvd rom.
This is an interesting one!!!This is for those who watch movies on their computer's dvd rom drive!!!
There is a software called dvd idle pro which can really increase the life of your dvd drive. By using the Smart Read-ahead Cache,
DVDIdle saves DVD data which will be played soon onto the hard disk cache or RAM cache, and
then feeds it to DVD player.
This allows the DVD drive to rest.
For example:
a 6X-speed DVD drive will only work for 15 minutes when you are watching a 90 minutes DVD
movie.
here is the link: http://www.dvdidle.com/download/DVDIdlePro59.exe
